Top two attractions in Holon - The Israeli Children's Museum Holon and Design Museum Holon

The Israeli Children's Museum Holon

Unlike other children's museums that allow free movement and hands-on play, visitors to the Israeli Children Museum-Holon participate in a structured experience led by a guide who engages with the children on a thematic adventure with the child as an active actor. The museum also directly addresses disabilities, communication, and human emotions. There are different journeys for different age groups, starting from age 2. The museum also features two world-renowned exhibits "Dialogue in the Dark” and "Invitation to Silence," and these tours are suitable for adults with or without children.

The book that every Anglo visitor and resident of Israel cannot do without!

"In and Around Jerusalem for Everyone - The Best Walks, Hikes and Outdoor Pools" . Available at Jerusalem bookstores including Pomeranz Booksellers (tel: 02-623 5559 with courier service available)  and on Amazon.  Click here for incredible reviews.

Tours offered are the following: “Following Butterflies” and “A Trip with Yanshul” for ages 2.5 to 4, “The Kingdom of Time” for ages 3 to 7, “The Magical Forest for ages 6 to 8, “The Aliens” for ages 8 to 11 years, “The Beatles – Mystery Tour” for adults and children over the age of 5 years, and “Dialogue with Time” for those over the age of 10. Details about each of these tours are available on their website:

Hebrew tours open regularly. English tours open when requested depending on the availability of English-speaking guides

“Dialogue in the Dark” provides visitors with an insight into the world of the blind. The guides, who themselves are either visually impaired or completely blind, open visitors’ eyes to the world of the blind. Visitors go through a park, street and shuk in absolute darkness. At the end of the visit, they gather for a conversation (still held in the dark), with their blind guide. The conversation deals with issues such as disability, coping, senses, and life in general. The museum, which employs some 30 blind guides, is the largest employer of blind people in Israel. The tour is open to groups and families age 9 years and above. Also, to adults without children! Tours can be in English, depending on the availability of English-speaking guides.

“Invitation to Silence” is an unusual communication journey guided by the deaf. In this exhibition, one hears nothing, yet the talking doesn’t cease. One learns that you can hear through your eyes, and speak using your hands. Visitors discover a new way of communicating, through hand movements and body language. The deaf guides, for whom sign language is their main, and sometimes only, communication channel, help visitors discover the non-verbal communication skills that we all have. This exhibition is a unique opportunity for a dialogue between hearing and deaf people, helping visitors break through emotional barriers, prejudices and stereotypes. It is open to groups and families age 9 years and above. Also, to adults without children! Tours can be in English, depending on the availability of English-speaking guides.

The Design Museum Holon

The Design Museum Holon is part of a project to make Holon into an influential cultural and educational center., the thought being that design will be an important export industry for Israel. The museum is located in the cultural hub of Holon that includes a library, theater and cinematheque.

Design Museum Holon is the only one of its kind in Israel, and is intended to be the national platform for illustrating the importance of industrial, fashion, textile and jewelry design in our lives. In particular, it emphasizes the importance of design in a young emerging state and Israeli design within the context of world design.

Rather than showing permanent displays, the museum shows thematic exhibitions encompassing the entire museum that continue over many months. The intent of each exhibition is to put together (or design!) an entire story so as to transmit something of signifance to visitors. The advantage of this, of course, is that the museum also stays fresh and can be visited again and again. Be sure, though, to look up on line what exhibition is currently showing to be sure that it meets your interests. All the exhibits are clearly described in Hebrew and English. Audio is available in Hebrew through a QR code, but not English. Guided tours for groups can be arranged.

Before stepping inside, notice the iconic facade of the building made up of 5 curved bronze-colored, weathered-steel ribbons. A cafeteria is attached to the building that sells hot and cold drinks and snack foods. Chairs and tables are also set up outside. If you need something more substantial you are only a short distance from a shopping mall.

Directions and parking: Enter “Design Museum Holon” into Waze. There is street parking outside the museum, although all the spaces are liable to be taken. Therefore, better is to use the adjoining parking lot and to enter “חניון המדיטק” directly into Waze. It is on Ilona Feher St. and adjoining the museum. There are no gates or barriers and parking is free.

Admission: Hours are Sunday close, Monday 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Tuesday 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Wednesday 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Thursday 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Friday 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, and Saturday 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. There is an admission charge. The box office phone number is 073 215 1500 or 1 899 202 930. This is the museum’s website:
